US President Donald Trump has reignited a long-running controversy over Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar’s identity and marriage history, claiming she used a false name to enter Congress and should resign.
In a post on social media, Trump alleged that Omar’s real name was “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi”, the same surname used by her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi. He also revived the claim that the congresswoman married her brother, an allegation she has repeatedly denied.
Trump offered no supporting evidence in the post for his assertion that Omar used a false identity to win election or that she had committed fraud. His demand that she leave Congress was a political call, not a legal finding.
The controversy has resurfaced amid a federal investigation into Omar’s immigration history. The Washington Post reported on October 13 that investigators were examining claims concerning her birth date and citizenship paperwork. Omar has rejected allegations of wrongdoing.
A disputed claim with a long history
Questions about Omar’s marriages first gained widespread attention during her 2016 campaign for the Minnesota state legislature. Critics alleged that she had married Elmi in 2009 to help him obtain US immigration status and claimed the two were siblings.
Omar has consistently denied that allegation. In a statement addressing the claims, she described suggestions that Elmi was her brother as “absurd and offensive”.
Investigations by news organisations have examined her marriage records and personal history. A 2019 review by the Minneapolis Star Tribune could neither conclusively confirm nor disprove the claim that Elmi was her brother. PolitiFact also found that publicly available evidence did not establish the alleged family relationship.
FactCheck.org separately addressed claims about Omar’s name in 2019, explaining that the confusion stemmed partly from her former marriage and the names associated with it.
What the records show
Omar married Ahmed Nur Said Elmi in 2009. Their divorce was finalised in 2017, and she legally married Ahmed Hirsi in 2018. She has children with Hirsi.
The name “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi” reflects the name associated with her former marriage. Its appearance does not, by itself, establish that she used a fraudulent identity when seeking election to Congress.
The distinction matters. Allegations about a politician’s personal history are not proof of electoral or immigration fraud, and no publicly established finding cited in the reports above confirms that Omar married a sibling.
Political pressure intensifies
Trump has repeatedly targeted Omar, a Minnesota Democrat and one of the first Somali-American women elected to Congress. Their dispute has become part of a wider political conflict over immigration, national identity and the role of Muslim Americans in public life.
In his latest post, Trump called on House Speaker Mike Johnson to be informed of the allegations and declared that Omar should no longer serve in Congress. He also claimed that the Democratic Party had effectively conceded her seat.
Those statements were Trump’s assertions, not confirmation that Omar had resigned, been disqualified or lost her seat. Any legal challenge to her eligibility would require evidence and the relevant legal process.
The central questions remain whether investigators can substantiate the claims surrounding Omar’s immigration records and whether any official findings emerge. Until then, the allegations should not be treated as established fact.
