Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has been discharged from hospital after collapsing at the club’s training ground last week.
The 40-year-old Belgian was diagnosed with meningeal irritation, sporting director Max Eberl confirmed on Wednesday. He will now recover at home with rest and medication.
The news has brought relief to Bayern. However, no date has been set for Kompany’s return to the touchline.
Cause of Collapse Identified
Kompany was taken to hospital on Friday, October 23, after collapsing while watching a training session involving Bayern’s reserve team. The club had initially said he was suffering from a virus. Further medical examinations were then carried out.
Speaking to German broadcaster ARD before Bayern’s German Cup match against Magdeburg, Eberl confirmed that the cause had been identified.
“We have identified the cause: it is a case of meningeal irritation, which is what triggered the incident last Friday,” he said.
Meningeal irritation is not the same as a confirmed diagnosis of meningitis. No further details about Kompany’s medical condition were disclosed.
Rest Ordered Before Return
Kompany has been allowed to continue his recovery at home. Rest and medication have been prescribed as part of his rehabilitation.
“He has now been allowed to go home, where he can continue his rehabilitation,” Eberl said.
He added that he was confident the coach would return to the touchline at full strength.
“I believe it is the best and most wonderful news for all of us,” Eberl said.
Bayern had warned on Saturday that Kompany’s absence could last “weeks, not days”. His recovery will therefore take priority over an immediate return to work.
Danks Continues to Lead Bayern
Assistant coach Aaron Danks has taken charge during Kompany’s absence. He oversaw Bayern’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Freiburg on Sunday. The Englishman also led the team against Magdeburg in the German Cup on Wednesday. Bayern won that match 6-1.
After the Freiburg victory, Danks said the coaching staff would avoid discussing football with Kompany while he recovered.
The club has not announced when the manager will resume his duties. Medical clearance will determine the timing of his return.
Health Concerns Had Emerged Earlier
Kompany had appeared unwell during Bayern’s 6-1 victory over RB Leipzig in mid-October. He was also doubtful for the Champions League match against Arsenal. He eventually took his place on the touchline for the 2-2 draw. His collapse came two days later.
Bayern are now preparing for a crucial Bundesliga meeting with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. For now, the club’s focus remains on Kompany’s recovery, with Danks continuing to oversee the team.
The discharge marks an encouraging step. But his return will depend on his recovery and medical advice.
