German football giants Bayern Munich and Dutch side Ajax Amsterdam are expected to headline the opening of Nairobi’s new Raila Odinga International Stadium on January 5, 2027, in a high-profile match that will bring two of Europe’s best-known clubs to Kenya.

President William Ruto announced the fixture on Wednesday, October 28, describing it as a milestone for the country’s sporting ambitions and a fulfilment of his pledge to build a world-class venue capable of hosting leading international teams.

“Come 5th January 2027, we will open this stadium with a historic match between two giants of European football, FC Bayern Munich of Germany and FC Ajax of Amsterdam,” Ruto said.

The 60,000-seat stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium, is located at Jamhuri Grounds along Ngong Road in Nairobi. It is expected to become one of Kenya’s principal sporting venues as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Uganda and Tanzania.

A new chapter for Kenyan sport

The President described the facility as a major investment in Kenya’s sporting infrastructure, noting that the country had not built a new international stadium since Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, opened in 1987.

The stadium has a hybrid playing surface, 52 skyboxes, video assistant referee (VAR) technology and goal-line technology, according to Ruto.

He said the venue would provide a platform for international competitions while creating opportunities for local athletes, businesses and young people hoping to build careers in sport.

“This is more than the opening of a stadium. It is a statement of who we are, and most importantly, who we are becoming,” he said.

The government has also linked the project to broader economic ambitions, including job creation, tourism and attracting private investment into the sports sector.

A tribute to Raila Odinga

The stadium bears the name of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a prominent figure in Kenyan politics who was known for his interest in football.

Ruto said the choice of Bayern Munich and Ajax carried symbolic significance. He linked Bayern’s German heritage to Raila’s name while pointing to Ajax’s reputation for developing young players.

The reference to talent also connects with the venue’s original name, Talanta, a Swahili word meaning talent.

The opening match is intended to showcase the stadium to international audiences and highlight Nairobi’s capacity to host major sporting events.

AFCON 2027 preparations continue

The stadium is expected to play a central role in Kenya’s preparations for AFCON 2027, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17 across Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

However, construction progress alone does not establish that a venue is ready to host international matches. Parliamentary updates cited in reports have put completion at about 94 per cent, with technical and operational preparations still required.

The government has presented the Bayern Munich–Ajax fixture as part of its wider effort to attract private-sector participation in sports infrastructure. Ruto said the match would follow a commercial model involving corporate partnerships and revenue generation.

If delivered as announced, the January encounter would give the stadium a high-profile debut before the continental tournament.

For Kenyan football, the larger test will be whether the new facility can sustain international standards, support local sporting development and deliver lasting benefits beyond its opening night.
