ODM leader Oburu Oginga has spoken out amid concerns about his health. A deeply personal message was shared on Thursday, October 15, as he marked his 83rd birthday in hospital.

The day also marked one year since the death of his younger brother, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. The two milestones were remembered with both gratitude and grief.

A Birthday Marked by Grief

In a social media post, Oburu described the date as a meeting point between life and loss. His birthday, he wrote, would always carry a special meaning after Raila’s death.

“Physical separation cannot touch a brotherhood written in the heavens,” he said.

A tribute was also paid to Raila’s memory. Oburu said their bond remained unbroken, despite his brother’s death.

“As I mark the anniversary of my birth, I carry your spirit within mine,” he wrote. He ended the message by wishing Raila peace.

Thanks to Family and Doctors

Oburu also thanked those who marked his birthday at The Nairobi Hospital, where he is recovering.

His spouses, Dr Ann Oburu and Mama Judith Oburu, were recognised for their support. Medical staff, ODM members and his household team were also thanked for arranging a birthday surprise.

“Your love and presence have made this solemn yet special day truly comforting,” he said.

The message offered a glimpse of the party leader’s circumstances. However, no specific diagnosis was disclosed in the statement.

Why He Missed Raila’s Memorial

Oburu’s absence from Raila’s first death anniversary commemoration in Bondo had prompted questions from mourners and supporters.

Earlier on Thursday, Raila’s widow, Ida Odinga, said Oburu was unwell but not seriously ill. She said he had been advised by his doctors to rest and avoid public gatherings.

A message delivered on his behalf by Kisii Governor Simba Arati confirmed that strict bed rest had been ordered, with public appearances prohibited for the immediate future.

“My heart, mind and spirit are firmly with you at Migwena Cultural Ground,” Oburu said in the message.

Family Urges Caution Over Health Reports

Oburu was admitted to The Nairobi Hospital on October 4, after returning from medical treatment in the United Kingdom, according to reports.

His family has urged the public to avoid circulating unverified claims about his condition. In an earlier statement, relatives said he needed time to recover after weeks of treatment abroad and in Kenya.

No further details about his condition were provided in the birthday message. The family’s appeal was for privacy and patience as he recuperates.

For Oburu, the day carried two meanings: another year of life and the first anniversary of losing his younger brother. His tribute reflected both, as he continued his recovery away from the memorial gathering.
