Vivo Energy Kenya has condemned a disturbing incident at a Nairobi petrol station after a video showing a man spraying petrol onto a vehicle went viral on social media, raising questions about safety at fuel outlets.

The footage, recorded on the night of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, at Shell Westview Service Station, shows a man holding a fuel nozzle and directing petrol onto the exterior of a vehicle. Another man is seen standing nearby.

The incident has attracted public attention because of the potential danger of handling petrol outside its intended use, particularly at a facility where flammable products are stored and dispensed.

In a statement issued on Thursday, October 29, Vivo Energy Kenya, which markets and distributes Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the country, described the conduct as reckless and negligent.

“We strongly condemn this act of irresponsible, reckless and negligent conduct. Such behaviour poses a serious risk to public safety and endangers people's lives,” the company said.

The company further distanced itself from the behaviour captured in the footage, insisting that it did not reflect the safety standards expected across its network of Shell service stations.

“Safety is our highest priority, and the behaviour shown in the video does not reflect the standards expected at any of the Shell service stations in Kenya,” Vivo Energy stated.

Authorities notified as company reviews incident

Vivo Energy said it was investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and confirmed that the retailer operating the Westview outlet had reported the matter to the relevant authorities for investigation and appropriate action.

The company also announced plans to reinforce safety requirements across its service station network to ensure that established procedures are followed.

It thanked members of the public who raised concerns after the video circulated, reiterating its commitment to protecting customers, employees and other people visiting its outlets.

However, Vivo Energy did not disclose whether the individuals captured in the video had been identified, whether any arrests had been made or what specific action would be taken against those involved.

The incident has renewed attention on the importance of observing safety precautions at petrol stations. Petrol is highly flammable, and accidental spills or fuel vapour can create dangerous conditions when exposed to an ignition source.
