Jay-Z is heading to the Super Bowl stage for the first time. The rapper will headline the halftime show on February 14, 2027, at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.
The announcement was made by the NFL, Apple Music and Roc Nation on Monday. It marks a new chapter for the hip-hop star, whose company has helped shape the event’s musical line-up since 2019.
From Behind the Scenes to Centre Stage
For years, Jay-Z has helped select the artists who perform at the NFL’s biggest game. Through Roc Nation, he has played a major role in the show’s direction.
But this time, the spotlight will be on him.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he had long hoped the rapper would eventually perform. The decision, he added, would allow audiences to experience Jay-Z’s artistry and cultural influence on a global stage.
Goodell said his original request to Roc Nation was simple: that Jay-Z take the stage himself when the time felt right.
A Milestone 30 Years in the Making
The announcement follows Jay-Z’s celebrations marking 30 years since the release of his debut album, Reasonable Doubt.
The anniversary programme included sold-out concerts in several cities, including Los Angeles. The shows at SoFi Stadium brought him back to the venue where the Super Bowl performance will take place.
“From ‘Reasonable Doubt’ to standing on the Super Bowl Halftime stage, this has been a journey,” Jay-Z said.
He described the opportunity as a dream come true after three decades in music and culture.
Will Beyoncé Join Him?
Attention has already turned to possible guest performers. Jay-Z’s wife, Beyoncé, is likely to feature in fan speculation, given her own history with the Super Bowl halftime show.
However, no guest performers have been confirmed. Whether Jay-Z will perform alone or bring fellow artists on stage remains unclear.
His catalogue offers plenty of choices. Hits such as Empire State of Mind, 99 Problems and Run This Town could feature in a career-spanning set.
Following a Line of Global Stars
Jay-Z will follow a long line of major artists who have performed during the championship game. Recent headliners have included Bad Bunny, Kendrick Lamar, Usher, Rihanna and The Weeknd.
The halftime show has grown into a major entertainment event in its own right. It attracts viewers well beyond the NFL’s core audience.
Kendrick Lamar’s 2025 performance set a record for the most-watched Super Bowl halftime show, according to the BBC report.
A Career Beyond Music
Jay-Z, whose real name is Shawn Carter, has earned 25 Grammy Awards. He was the first rapper inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame and entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2021.
His Super Bowl appearance will add another milestone to a career spanning music, business and cultural influence.
For fans, the next question is what the performance will include. For Jay-Z, it will be a rare moment in which the man who helped shape the show becomes its central attraction.
