Dr Chris W. Obura, a retired dentist and former chairman of The Nairobi Hospital, has died. His death was announced by the Kenya Hospital Association, which paid tribute to his contribution to healthcare and hospital leadership.

Obura died on 13 October 2026, according to a condolence statement issued on Friday by Dr Barcley Onyambu, chairman of the association’s Board of Management.

The announcement was made on behalf of the association’s board, management and the wider Nairobi Hospital community. His passing was described as a moment of deep sorrow.

A Pioneer in Kenyan Healthcare

Obura was remembered as an early African doctor to care for patients at The Nairobi Hospital. He later rose to lead its Board of Management.

During his time in leadership, governance reforms were pursued, hospital operations were modernised and expansion projects were undertaken. The association said his work helped strengthen the institution’s standing in the region.

“His legacy at The Nairobi Hospital shall live to serve generations of mankind,” Onyambu said in the condolence statement.

A Career Built on Dentistry

Obura’s contribution to healthcare extended beyond hospital leadership. His career included clinical dentistry, public service, medical education and corporate governance.

He studied dentistry at Makerere University before undertaking further training in the United Kingdom. According to a professional profile in ICEA Lion’s 2018 integrated report, he trained at Guy’s Medical and Dental School at the University of London and obtained a Licentiate in Dental Surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Service in Public Health

After returning to Kenya, Obura served as Chief Dental Officer in the Ministry of Health from 1965 to 1971. His work came during a period when public health services were being developed and expanded.

He also served as an honorary senior lecturer at the University of Nairobi’s medical school between 1968 and 1971. In addition, he worked as a consultant dental and oral surgeon at Kenyatta National Hospital.

Leadership at The Nairobi Hospital

Obura chaired the Kenya Hospital Association and The Nairobi Hospital between 2002 and 2012, according to the ICEA Lion report.

His combination of clinical experience and management work placed him at the intersection of patient care and institutional leadership. At The Nairobi Hospital, he was credited with helping guide governance changes, operational improvements and capital projects.

His death comes months after the hospital mourned veteran gynaecologist Job Obwaka, who died aged 83. In May 2026, the institution paid tribute to Obwaka for his years of service in medicine and hospital leadership.

Obura’s career spanned decades of work in dentistry, public health and private healthcare. He leaves behind a record of service in clinical practice, teaching and the management of one of Kenya’s best-known hospitals.
